Today we have another musical extravaganza of a viral video lined up for everybody. However, this music video has a special twist in the form of Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies, Fruit Ninja, Flight Control and Cut the Rope.
The five member band Hey Geronimo, composed of Tony Garrett, Greg Chiapello, Pete Kilroy, Andrew Stone and Rosco Pearson, seems to have enjoyed themselves thoroughly while making this video. It’s kind of bizarre seeing two dimensional video game characters reenacted in real life, but I guess this is the kind of thing that makes it unique among other music videos.
Anyway, here’s the video in question, so pump up the volume and enjoy this musical video game treat:
PROS:
- Making use of a popular trend to get noticed – The music industry can be a difficult niche to succeed in unless you’re able to get people’s attention, one way or another. Hey Geronimo seems to have done just that by appealing to a popular market that hits a very wide demographic: iPhone and iPhone apps users. By getting on the bandwagon of the Apple gaming niche, they’re able to propel their album’s flagship title into a viral sensation that’s slowly getting noticed across the ‘Net.
- Making something out of nothing – Like I said earlier, the music scene can be a tough crowd to appeal to, especially if you’re an indie band with just a small following. However, after this video hit YouTube, it was able to garner a large amount of hits in such a small amount of time.
- Music is a great medium to draw your audience – I’m pretty sure I mentioned this in one of my past viral video reviews. Whenever you make use of music to target your viewers, you aren’t just appealing to music lovers in general; your music video also relates to anyone who might find the lyrics or the video itself funny, inspiring or just plain entertaining.
CONS:
- Weak signoffs at the end of the video and on the YouTube video page – I’ve always stressed that it’s important to leave a visible and well-defined sign off at the end of a video if you want to entice your followers and tell them where they can get more of the same viral goodness. A quick tip that I can give, especially if you have your videos posted in YouTube, is to post your signoff in the first two sentences of the video description. This should make it show up on the same page as the video without having the user to click on the “Show more” button below the short video description.
- Sitting through the entire thing might not appeal to everyone – Considering that a standard music video is usually longer than most viral videos that you see nowadays, it might be difficult for some sit through the entire 3 minute or so of the video’s running time. This is especially the case if you aren’t really an iPhone fan or you aren’t really interested in video games.
All in all, today’s pick a strong contender for viral video stardom. It still has a relatively low view count compared to other viral vids, but it’s only been a week (at the time of this article’s writing) since it was released and it’s already pushing around 270,000 views.
