How to “de-annoy” your video advertising

You sit down on your couch while waiting for your favorite show and you see advertisements. You stand up to grab some chips from the kitchen and make your way back. You still see advertisements. You decide to grab a cold drink from the fridge and you see advertisements. Finally you got to your favorite series and every now and then you see ads. Commercials here, advertisements there — they’re typically everywhere. Doesn’t it get to you? I mean it’s pretty annoying, right?

I’m not one to preach about consumerism and no, that’s not what I’m going to do. I’m going to talk about how to remove those things that annoy your prospects with regards to advertising videos. It could be the repetition of the ad, or the music or even the cheesiness of the commercial.

The point is, if the viewer gets tired of it, you’re going to have a serious PR problem. The key here is for your video ad to leave a mark that’s pleasant and even rewarding for your target audience.

Here are a few things to consider when “de-annoying” your video and enticing your viewers.

  • Make it unique – This could be an understatement (not to mention obvious), but when you’re making a video ad for a product or service and promoting it via YouTube, it’s a must that it has to be unique. Otherwise no one would view your video at all. Here’s an example of a “unique” commercial:

It’s not new, but it certainly is something that’s unique.

  • Tell a story – If your ad gets in people’s faces way too much, chances are that people will get tired of it eventually. This is especially true if your video follows the traditional advertising formulas where there is little appeal to interest on the part of the viewer. Think of it this way: your audience is doing you a favour by watching your ads. The least you can do is to make it an interesting experience for them. The best way to do this is to have a compelling storyline that’s relevant to the message that you want to send across as an advertiser.

There you go, folks. A few things to keep in mind when trying to get the “ick” out of your video ad. Remember, a video ad is created for people to genuinely like your brand and not to drive them away. Let me know what you think in the comment section below.

Until then,
