WordPress Plugins that Make Life Easier
WordPress is so popular due to two reasons: it’s absolutely free and it’s open source. I don’t need to explain the first one to you, but having an open source CMS opened up a universe of possibilities to average users like me. Due to this characteristic of WordPress, we have new themes and plugins that come out every day, allowing us to pick and choose which ones make the most sense to our blogs.
Plugins are great in particular because they extend the capabilities of WordPress way beyond what we get out of the box. They’re useful for everything from SEO to maintenance. If you’re new to WordPress plugins and you don’t have much of an idea about what to get, consider the following to jumpstart your blog.
- WordPress SEO – This is probably the best all-in-one SEO plugin currently out there. It helps you with sitemaps, breadcrumbs, robots, analytics, canonical tags and much more. The great thing about its features is that they all work perfectly. If there’s one essential SEO plugin out there, this has to be it.
- Ad Injection – If you’re monetizing your site with pay-per-click ads or affiliate links, Ad Injection is just the thing for you. It helps you do ad placement easily so you can position them where your visitors can be enticed to click them.
- Custom Sidebars – This is a nice plugin for people who want to spice up their otherwise bland themes. Good-looking sidebars attract attention and clicks from visitors, allowing you to leverage your content and ads.
- Broken Link Checker – Links that don’t function are bad news. Not only will they cause poor user experiences, they’ll also get you flagged by search engines. This results in lower traffic than you deserve. This plugin allows you to detect broken and rotting links before it’s too late.
- Dynamic Content Gallery – This one’s really cool. Even without a premium theme installed, this plugin allows you to display a content slider on top of your homepage, making your featured or recent posts more attractive.
- Optimize DB – This plugin clears up a cluttered database, allowing it to run smoother and faster. Site speed is a ranking factor, so make sure your site’s always in top condition.
- Redirection – Having a site redesign? A lot of indexed pages could go missing from Google’s radar and be seen as 404 Not Found errors. That’s bad news. Let search engines know where the replacement pages are with 301 redirects. Redirection makes that easy even if you don’t know squat about server-side coding.
Those are just some of the plugins that can help even the most casual WordPress users blog like pros. What are your favorite plugins? Any great ones that you want to share? Let me and the other readers know in the comments section below.
