Blog More in 2010 – Or Else!

I just started this blog last year, but I already feel like I could be doing a lot more.  In fact, it’s right here on my list of New Years Resolutions:
“Blog More”.

Yep. :)   But you know, those two little words really aren’t motivating me all that much, but here I am, at the keyboard.  So I may as well use this time to whip a list to spur myself on, AND YOU should be blogging more too.

So let’s get on that together - whoa, I made a bona-fide list! Weird – I’m not usually that together.  It must be that whole food diet.  Thanks Acai Berries!!

1. SEO – Duh. More pages on the site means more pages in the index.  More pages means better rankings.  Fresh content means better rankings.

That’s kind of the whole point of the blog. :)

2. Traffic – Outside of the daily readers you can build up when you blog frequently, most people overlook the MASSIVE amount of recurring traffic you can build up through your old content.  If you write good articles that stand the test of time, they can live WAY longer than you might think.

3. Familiarity – If you know me (sigh), two things become apparent very quickly.  I talk LOUD, and I talk OFTEN! I blame secondhand smoke.  :)   I’m also pretty friendly and outgoing (depending on my BAC), so it goes without saying that whenever I go anywhere, I make an impression (and carry bail money).  A blog will help me do that virtually, and with much less rug-burn than in real life.  And the more people that know me (sigh), the more people I can help.  Or at least cause them to count off their own blessings because they are NOT like me (Cue James Horner Soundtrack).

4. Frequency – In marketing, we know that repeating a message has a cumulative effect on response.  Now, this blog isn’t all about marketing all the time, but I DO want my readers to pay attention.  If there’s something new for my visitors every time they drop by, they’ll keep dropping by.

That’s good for business long-term.

5. Exercise – Besides going on a physical health kick when I moved to the West Coast, I’ve found that I’ve had an amazing resurgence of creativity and my “business brain” is practically exploding with new ideas.  Must be the fresh air.  Or dang!  What if it’s all those Acai Berries!  They truly ARE a miracle food!

… So anyways. :)

Just like the body does, the mind loses its edge if you don’t use it often.  Since my “job” is thinking up new ways to make people more money in business, I can’t let that happen, right?  The back and forth of blogging here and getting comments really keeps the old noodle in fighting shape.  (Ew!)

6. Preservation – I talk fast, and I think even faster.  The problem with that is that often, I don’t actually put those ideas down anywhere, and I’ll lose them forever.

If I put them here, I get to actually USE them at some point AND hopefully you can benefit from seeing some of the “raw materials” that I think about as I grow my own businesses.  Plus, writing helps me KEEP coming up with new ideas.

And ever I run out, I can go back and read stuff that I forgot I wrote.  Once I’m not in the moment anymore, I can be objective and tell when I actually have a great idea and when I’m just running my big mouth to fill space.  (No, that is NOT what I’m doing right now!)

7. Lumber – In addition to simply preserving ideas, blogs can actually help you craft the materials to make your own information products out of.  If you build up a decent audience, you can get instant market research.  That same audience can help you refine your ideas, and as a bonus, you’ve got built-in prospects if you develop any premium information down the line.

NOTE: Have you seen that movie “Julie and Julia”?  There’s an example of how a blog turned into a book, and then into a MOVIE.  And they aren’t even in the IM industry!  All I know is, when they make a movie of this blog, I want Meryl Streep to play ME. :D

8. Networking – An active blog gives me a way to connect new people I’m meeting with what I do.  Not that I’m applying for jobs or anything. :)   But your blog can serve as a more impressive example of your work and values than any kind of resume ever could.  It lets me connect more deeply with my customers, potential clients, and even potential future partners.  But it only works if I update it. :)

So there’s 8 reasons off the top of my head why I should quit worrying about it and just BLOG MORE ALREADY!!

And as Dick Van Patten said, “Eight is enough!”

Until Next time, GO BLOG!

Andy

P.S. Are there any reasons that YOU update your blog that I didn’t name?  Any advantages that I’m not aware of? Let me know in the comments!

    Hey there Andy

    Great post, as usual.

I like to tie my blogs into friend feed and then tie friend feed into my Face Book and Twitter accounts. Although I know it’s important to social network in real time, this helps me update all of my followers on a regular basis.

So… I guess, blogging helps me continue to put new content on my social networks to KIT.

I also use my blog for an excuse to record more videos for You Tube and other video networks.

Blogging gets my creative juices going in print… which I later turn to videos.

The way I see it, a blog is a personal accountability tool to expand and repurpose communication with my subscribers, readers and social networking communities; while continuously having a reason to create other types of media to post online.

Thanks for an awesome refresher of why we should keep being consistent.

    Regards
    Bob Yeager

You pretty much nailed it Andy! If anything else comes to mind, I’ll have to come back & comment :-)

Haven’t really gotten my blog off the ground, but I imagine accountability might be one to add to the list. Having even a few people potentially reading my blog (or having a sizeable audience that knows me intimately and vice versa) is enough to make me feel accountable and motivate me to come up with stuff to post about frequently.

    Andy,
Great post, you did get my creative thoughts flowing. You often use a quote or line from somewhere to make a point like Dick Van Patten’s Eight is Enough. So I was thinking why not incorporate more lines or quotes to make a point, if anything, certain lines can create a particular mood or feeling; like for example; The other day when I was“ sitting on a park bench” , I came up with a great product idea. I was “over the hills and far away” from my home and “ I could see for miles and miles and miles” . Then it dawned on me that “ you never give me your money, you only give me your inspiration” and my product idea was off and running. What was it that I was going to do to “ keep the customer satisfied” . Well “what is and what should never be” is really the point, I guess. Anyway…………I’m done, I’ll just be “rambling on” .
So guess all the songs and you’re good or just old, like me. No point here just a creative moment that you sparked Andy, thanks ! and thanks for some blogging ideas !

No doubt, blogging is the way. I still have 3 year old articles that alone gets 100+ views a day for one post! Keep up the awesome content Andy!

My wife suckered me into seeing Julie and Julia and the whole time I sat there and wondered how a story like this could be made into a book and then a movie. Worst movie I think I’ve seen since Punch Drunk Love. Since you’re a movie guy, you probably liked that too. :P

    Meryl Streep? Really?

That got me thinking… who really WOULD play Andy in the 2010 blockbuster “IM” (working title)?

So I think Frank Kern would INSIST (as we all know) on Matthew McConaughey playing him…
but I got some ideas on who would play Eben Pagan and a few others… particularly a CORKER for Andy…
I’ll let you know when I’ve blogged about it haha :D

    Tony.

My main reason I need to blog more in 2010 is that, as an inventor and science writer, I sincerely DO have a solution to housing everybody on the planet easily cheaply and immediately using readily-available locally-resourced recyclable materials and that, considering the events in Haiti recently with around three million people homeless, living in tents, and with the tropical rainy season approaching, I ought to do something it. As a domainer for the past decade, my solution has been to register over 40 citybuilder.com domains including a score of citybuilder domains for major cities and towns throughout the US, host them under a central domain, internationalbuilding.com, and develop them as shared open domains with professional community membership software. In this way I plan to promote how the Internet can be better organised at the DNS level and how the world can develop an intelligent international building system that houses everyone and, in turn, solves climate change.

Doesn’t get any simpler then that list.

I think along the ‘exercise’ line is the creativity line. I really believe humans benefit from creative expression. And blogging does that for a lot of people.

Your sense of humor has me cracking up every time you blog about something! I liked this post because you have some great things to say about why we all need to blog more to help our online ventures. Not in a spammy way, but with thoughtfulness, excellent content, good anchor text, the right keywords, etc.

For me, #9 on this list would be: “To become a better writer.” I have been doing copywriting and article marketing for clients for a few years now and have noticed a huge difference in my early writings versus what I am doing today. I fully expect that with continued practice, as with anything we do frequently, my writing skills will improve. Hey, I’m no Andy Jenkins, but I can wish, can’t I? LOL!

As far as who would play you in your blogumentary movie…I’m going to have to go with Jack Black. I think he’s funny and just the right guy to play you on the big screen! I’m just saying…

Keep up the great work Andy!

    Hi Andy,

just found your blog through a reference on the Warrior Forum. Great post.

One reason that was implied but not quite explicit (unless I missed it): It can be the hub for a whole social media marketing system, where you send people from Twitter and all those places to your blog for your new posts (and/or supply them all with content).

And the biggest part of the fun is that you can have people comment and interact with you as well as with each other right there on your blog, something that they generally can’t do on a static website. You touch on that in point 8, but I think it goes much farther than that.

Sure, you can do that on Twitter too, or on Facebook, but if it’s on your blog, it’s on your own virtual real estate…

  • Dave

Andy, you totally failed at your 2010 mission. Maybe blog more in 2011?
